Far Western Region Trekking

Rara Lake Trekking

Rara Lake TrekLake Rara is an extraordinary natural phenomenon in remote western Nepal. The lake is the largest in Nepal. It is situated at an altitude of 2987 m above Karnali valley, and only prevented from emptying into it by a huge natural 914m dam. The area has been declared a National Park and is notable for the wild grandeur of its exceptional scenery. Blue sheep and snow leopards have been sighted. West Nepal is much more primitive, underdeveloped and wilder than the rest of the country, so those who trek this area must be prepared for much more primitive conditions than else where in Nepal. Much of our way lies on an important trading route to Tibet and we likely to see sheep and goats used as pack animals. To reach Rara lake we cross Churachi Lekh, which is covered by snow in the spring, and spend a day or two exploring the lake region before turning south to Jumla, the district center with a busy bazar, from where we fly back to Nepalgunj.
